With lifestyle being one of the pillars to my coaching, your surroundings falls under that umbrella. Who and what you surround yourself with plays a major role in how you show up in life because your surroundings affect how you think and feel. How you show up will ultimately determine the results you have in life.
Surroundings represent so many different things. Your job, home, grocery store you shop most, the music you listen to, tv shows you watch, who you follow on social media, the books you read, and even the people you spend time with.
When you are intentional with your surroundings, you can better create the life and results you want.
Social Media
Social media can be great! But following too many people and being on social media too often can increase anxiety and stress.
It’s so easy to start to believe that everyone’s life is perfect when we’re constantly seeing highlight reels of people lives. Understand that there is not one person alive with a perfect life.
Ask yourself when it comes to the people you follow “Is this persons page adding value to my life, or is it triggering undesired thoughts within me about my life?”. Edit accordingly.
Physical Surroundings
Look around… When you take in what’s around you in your home, how do you feel? Overwhelmed? Stressed? Frustrated? Defeated?
Studies have shown that the tidiness of your space can drastically affect your mood. If your space feels cluttered, it can make the room feel tight and claustrophobic. Conversely, a room that lacks decor can feel empty and cold.
Define what a happy median is for you when it comes to what a calming and inspiring space is to you. Then, take smalls steps to create a space you truly desire to be in. Pay attention to the suggestion of taking small steps because trying to complete an entire overhaul will simply create more overwhelm and leave you worse off than when you started, which will ultimately defeat the purpose.
One more tip, if you struggle with seasonal depression, one of the biggest shifts that I’ve made is making sure allow in natural sunlight and buy myself weekly flowers from the grocery store. So in the dark and dreary winter, I’m still surrounded by life!
Purpose Driven and Goal Oriented Relationships
This one matters sooooo much! You’ve probably heard the phrase ” you’re the sum total of your 5 closest friends”… No words are truer.
If you’re the only one in your circle that is trying to obtain goals or is focused on living a more intentional life, chances are, you’re going to be led astray by those closest to you that aren’t interested in doing the same.
Do you know how many times I’ve heard while on my weight loss journey “Oh I can’t be that strict” or “This one time won’t hurt.”? After multiple experiences of hearing that, the chances of you derailing and blowing your goals to the wind is very high.
Now I’m not saying that you must let everyone go, but it would be wise to at least find new friends that align with your desired way of living. Self-discipline is essential to reaching your big, long-term goals, and hanging out with other women who possess admirable willpower can be a crucial ingredient in the secret sauce of success.
Likewise, if your partner is a sugar junky, a daily drinker, or prefers to veg out in front of Netflix every evening rather than read a good book or go for a long walk, it will be more of a struggle (though not impossible) for you to make healthier choices.
Are your surroundings serving you? if not, it may be time to make some changes.
